Sound—an art form tightly intertwined with time—creates a bridge that traverses the gaps between spaces and communities. This work draws from the diverse individuals and collective memories of Shenzhen, capturing the flow of people through day and night, the flickering rhythms of the city’s streets, the pace of conveyor belts carrying parcels across great distances, and the presence of those quietly etched into the deeper layers of time.
As the point of departure, the project re-encodes and rearticulates the trajectories of Shenzhen. Through field exploration and sonic sampling, we found that sound is not merely vibration or frequency, but a connective tissue of emotions and meanings—between people and objects, and between objects themselves. Through sound, traces that might otherwise fade are preserved, resurfacing in the shared spaces where the city and its inhabitants coexist
The visual materials are drawn from the people, events, and objects of Huaqiangbei in Shenzhen.
Outdoor Performance Version:
Marimba Performer: Yi Huang
The performed piece is Toccata for Marimba. By analyzing the composition’s rhythmic patterns, frequency distribution, and structural layers, the music is divided into seven sections, each characterized by a distinct rhythmic density. Key musical moments—such as rhythmic shifts and bursts of intensity—are extracted as trigger signals for the generation of corresponding visual forms.
Principle of Transformation:
The outdoor performance takes place in Futian District, Shenzhen, within a 32-meter-long corridor transformed into a cross-media theater through light-sculpture projection.
